RK 530 XRE Chain and Sprocket Kit – Yamaha YZF-R1 '09–14

Product Overview

A complete drive replacement for the 2009–2014 YZF-R1: an RK 530 XRE XW-ring chain in natural finish, a 17-tooth Driven steel front sprocket and a 47-tooth Driven steel rear. That is the gearing the bike left the factory with, so the kit goes on without changing how it pulls or what the speedometer reads.

Both sprockets are steel. Steel is heavier than aluminium but wears far more slowly, which is the trade most riders want on a bike that covers road miles. RK sell this as their OEM Replacement kit and describe it as built for high mileage.

The master link is a rivet type. It is pressed closed with a chain tool, not clipped on by hand — if you are not set up to rivet a master link, have it done.

If your R1 is a 2015 or later, this is not the kit for it. Yamaha moved that generation to a 525 chain and 16/41 gearing, and RK catalogue it separately.

Key Technology & Design

XW-ring sealing

  • RK state the XW-ring seal holds two lubrication pools, which keep the factory grease in the pin and bushing area and keep dirt out from between the rollers and bushings.

Service life over the previous generation

  • RK state the XRE lasts 20 percent longer than the XSO line it replaced.

Tensile strength

  • The 530 XRE is rated at 44 kN, or 9,900 lb.

Driven steel sprockets

  • The rear is a C45 steel alloy sprocket, black and case hardened. The front is C45 steel, case hardened and quenched.

Warranty

  • RK cover their OEM Replacement kits with a 20,000-mile warranty, registered through RK.

Fitment

Year(s) — Make / Model — Stock Gearing — Stock Chain

2009–2014Yamaha YZF-R117T / 47T530 — 120 links

A Note on 520, 525 and 530

The numbers look like they should mean length. They do not. 520, 525 and 530 all share the same 5/8-inch pitch — the distance from one pin to the next is identical across all three. The number describes roller width, and nothing else.

So a chain has to match the width your sprockets are cut for. And because the pin spacing never changes, the number of links a bike needs is a property of the bike — its wheelbase, swingarm and gearing — not of the pitch. This R1 takes 120 links at stock gearing whatever the width.

That is also why 520 conversions exist: a narrower chain and narrower sprockets carry less weight around with the rear wheel. The trade is service life, which is why the factory fits the wider chain.

Gearing — Staying Stock or Making a Change

This kit matches the stock 17-tooth front and 47-tooth rear on the 2009–2014 YZF-R1. Installing it keeps your bike at factory stock gearing. If you are considering a gearing change, here is the general framework. Going one tooth smaller on the front shortens gearing — quicker acceleration, higher RPM at highway speeds, reduced top speed. The effect is roughly equivalent to adding two to three teeth to the rear sprocket. Going one tooth larger lengthens gearing — lower cruise RPM, softer pull from a stop. Stock gearing on these bikes is well matched for general street use. Neither direction is right or wrong — it depends on how and where you ride.

One practical note: a change of more than a tooth or two can change the chain length you need. We cut chain in house, so work that out before you order, or ask us and we will work it out with you.

Description:

RK 530 XRE Chain and Sprocket Kit – Yamaha YZF-R1 ’09–14
