Product Overview
The D.I.D 520 ZVM-X is a heavy-duty 520-pitch chain built for high-power street and track bikes — think liter-class sportbikes and big naked bikes running stock or 520-converted gearing. It sits above D.I.D’s 520VX3 in the lineup, rated to a higher displacement ceiling and higher tensile strength, with thicker side plates. The Raven Edition is the black-finish version: glossy black inner and outer plates paired with silver-finished pins and rollers. Mechanically it’s the same ZVM-X chain — the black is a finish choice, not a different-spec chain.
This chain comes with D.I.D’s X-ring seal, supplied only with a rivet-style connecting link (included). A rivet tool is required to install it — not included with the chain.
Key Technology & Design
D.I.D’s X-ring seal has an X-shaped cross section rather than the round cross section used in O-ring chains. Instead of being squashed flat between the side plates, the X-ring twists slightly under plate pressure, creating four contact points instead of the two an O-ring produces. D.I.D states this reduces surface contact between the seal and the plates, leading to smoother power delivery and less energy loss, while helping the seal hold factory-packed grease in place over the life of the chain.
Compared to the 520VX3, the ZVM-X carries a higher displacement rating (1,200cc vs. 800cc), higher tensile strength (8,745 lb vs. 8,210 lb), and thicker side plates (2.2mm vs. 2.0mm) — the material differences behind D.I.D’s positioning of ZVM-X as the stronger of the two.
Keep in mind that chain lube applied from the outside doesn’t reach the sealed internal bushing — it’s there to protect the rollers, side plates, and sprocket contact surfaces from corrosion and to keep the seal lips pliable.
