- Suzuki GSX-R1000 (2017–2026) — 520 conversion, stock 17/45 gearing
Product Overview
This kit fits the 2017–2026 Suzuki GSX-R1000R and the 2017–2026 Suzuki GSX-R1000. Both bikes run a 525 chain from the factory. This is a 520 conversion kit — it replaces the stock 525 drivetrain with a lighter 520 chain and matched sprockets. The gearing ratio is unchanged from stock at 17 front / 45 rear.
The kit includes a Vortex 17-tooth steel front sprocket, a Vortex 45-tooth steel rear sprocket, and a Vortex 520 RX3 x-ring chain at 120 links with a rivet master link. All three components are finished in black.
Steel rear sprockets are the practical choice for street riders. They wear more slowly than aluminum under regular street conditions and hold up better over time on a bike used daily or for longer rides. Riders who prioritize longevity over weight savings are better served by steel.
Key Technology & Design
The 520 RX3 chain uses an x-ring seal design. X-ring seals have a four-contact-point profile compared to the two-contact-point profile of a standard o-ring. This geometry reduces friction against the side plates while maintaining lubrication retention. In practice, this means slightly less drag and longer seal life compared to a conventional o-ring chain. Tensile strength is rated at 41.8 kN (9,400 lb).
The rear sprocket is laser cut steel. Laser cutting produces consistent tooth geometry and clean edges across the full sprocket, which contributes to even chain engagement and consistent wear over the sprocket's service life.

Why Convert to 520
Suzuki equipped the GSX-R1000 and GSX-R1000R with a 525 chain from the factory. The 525 is a heavier, wider chain chosen for durability and longevity — it is the right call for a street bike that will see long service life under varied conditions.
A 520 chain is narrower and lighter. The real benefit is reduced rotating mass — the chain is in constant motion, and less weight in that loop means the engine is moving less inertia with every revolution. For track riders and riders who push hard on technical roads, this is a real and noticeable difference. For casual street commuters or riders who primarily use the bike for longer highway miles, the difference is subtle and may not be physically felt.
The tradeoff is lifespan. A 520 chain is working with less material than a 525. Under the same conditions and maintenance routine, it will generally not outlast a stock 525. Riders who prioritize chain longevity and lower maintenance frequency should consider staying with a 525-pitch kit instead.
The bottom line: the 520 conversion makes the most sense for riders who spend time on track or want to reduce drivetrain weight for performance street riding. For riders who prioritize durability and long service intervals, the stock 525 pitch is the more practical choice.
Gearing — Staying Stock or Making a Change
This kit matches the stock 17-tooth front and 45-tooth rear on both the GSX-R1000 and GSX-R1000R. Installing it keeps your bike at factory stock gearing.
If you are considering a gearing change in addition to the conversion, here is the general framework. Going one tooth smaller on the front shortens gearing — quicker acceleration, higher RPM at highway speeds, reduced top speed. The effect is roughly equivalent to adding two to three teeth to the rear sprocket. Going one tooth larger on the front lengthens gearing — lower cruise RPM, softer pull from a stop.
Stock gearing on these bikes is well matched for general street use. Neither direction is right or wrong — it depends on how and where you ride.
