Driven Racing 16-Tooth 520 Front Sprocket — Yamaha YZF-R6 / YZF-R6S

Main Fitment:

  • 1999–Present Yamaha YZF-R6 — stock tooth count (16T) — 520 conversion

Product Overview

This is a Driven Racing 16-tooth 520-pitch front sprocket for the Yamaha YZF-R6 and YZF-R6S. The R6 runs a 16-tooth front sprocket stock throughout its entire production run. This sprocket matches the stock tooth count — no gearing change — but requires replacing the chain and rear sprocket with 520-compatible components. Installing it keeps your bike at factory stock gearing.

The R6 ran 532-pitch chain stock from 1999–2005, then switched to 525-pitch from 2006 onward. Either way, this is a conversion to the lighter 520 pitch. Chain pitch and rear sprocket must be replaced as part of the conversion on all model years.

Key Technology & Design

Driven Racing makes this sprocket from case-hardened steel, drilled to reduce overall weight. Zinc/black finish.

Why Convert to 520

The R6 leaves the factory with 525-pitch chain from 2006 onward — chosen by Yamaha for durability and longevity under street use. Earlier models ran an even heavier 532-pitch chain. A 520 conversion replaces the chain and both sprockets with narrower, lighter components.

The real benefit is reduced rotating mass. A lighter chain and sprocket assembly means less weight spinning at the rear wheel with every acceleration and deceleration cycle. This is most noticeable for track riders and aggressive street riders — the bike responds more quickly to throttle inputs and feels lighter overall. For casual street commuters the difference is subtle and may not be physically felt.

The tradeoff is longevity. A 520 chain is working with less material than a 525 or 532 and will generally not outlast a stock-pitch setup under the same conditions. Riders who prioritize maximum chain life over rotating mass reduction are better served staying with the stock chain pitch.

The bottom line: 520 conversion is a meaningful upgrade for track use and performance-focused street riding. For everyday commuting and general street miles, the stock chain pitch is the more practical choice.

Gearing — Staying Stock or Making a Change

This sprocket matches the stock 16-tooth front on the R6 across all generations. Installing it keeps your bike at factory stock gearing.

If you are considering a gearing change in addition to the conversion, here is the general framework. Going one tooth smaller on the front shortens gearing — quicker acceleration, higher RPM at highway speeds, reduced top speed. The effect is roughly equivalent to adding two to three teeth to the rear sprocket. Going one tooth larger lengthens gearing — lower cruise RPM, softer pull from a stop.

Stock gearing on these bikes is well matched for general street use. Neither direction is right or wrong — it depends on how and where you ride.
