A Note on 520 and 525
The numbers look like they should mean length. They do not. 520 and 525 share the same 5/8-inch pitch, the distance from one pin to the next. The number describes roller width. A 520 kit replaces the chain and both sprockets together, because a 520 chain needs 520 sprockets.
Gearing — What Changes
Going one tooth smaller on the front shortens the gearing. You get quicker acceleration and higher RPM at highway speed, with some top speed given up. Adding teeth at the rear does the same thing, so this kit's 15/43 is a clearly shorter ratio than the stock 16/41. If you ride mostly highway miles, ask us about a stock-geared option.
A gearing change can change the chain length you need. We cut chain in house, so ask us if you want it worked out before you order.

Description:Vortex HFRS 520 Chain & Sprocket Kit – Black – Yamaha YZF-R1S ’16–18
Product Overview
Vortex’s HFRS kit for the 2016–2018 Yamaha YZF-R1S: a black Vortex 520 SX3 chain with a steel front and a laser-cut steel rear sprocket. It converts the R1S from its stock 525 chain to 520 and changes the gearing from the stock 16/41 to 15/43, one tooth down on the front and two up on the rear, for quicker acceleration.
This kit fits the R1S only. The standard R1 and the R1M use a different rear sprocket pattern, so it will not fit them. If you ride an R1 or an R1M, ask us for the kit that fits your bike.
Both sprockets are steel. Steel is heavier than aluminum but wears far more slowly, which suits a bike that covers road miles.
The master link is a rivet type. It is pressed closed with a chain tool, not clipped on by hand. If you are not set up to rivet a master link, have it done.
